Endovenous Laser Ablation (ELA)

ELA is one of the more recent technologies available to treat leg veins, using laser light to seal the incompetent underlying veins that lead to varicose veins.

During the procedure, a small laser fibre is inserted into the underlying incompetent vein. The laser is activated as the fibre is withdrawn, causing the vein to thermally ablate and close. The treated vein is then absorbed naturally by the body.

ELA is performed under local anaesthetic, allowing you to remain awake throughout the procedure, but only feeling minor discomfort. There is no need for hospitalisation and the treatment if generally completed in under one hour.

Endovenous Laser Ablation enables you to achieve the maximum results with minimal discomfort, pain or bruising. Post-operative complications are rare and the success rate of treatment is almost 100%.

After ELA, your leg will be placed into a compression stocking and you will need to walk almost immediately. Routine activity can be resumed that day and athletic or strenuous activities a short time later.

We will advise that you will need to walk for a minimum of 30 minutes per day for two weeks post-treatment and should avoid lifting heavy weights or high impact activities during this time.
